UrtheCast announces its official scheduled camera launch to the International Space Station
VANCOUVER, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ - UrtheCast Corp. ('UrtheCast') announces today that the Russian ISS Program has confirmed that UrtheCast's two Earth monitoring cameras are scheduled to launch to the International Space Station (ISS) on November 20, 2013 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket, along with a payload of space station supplies.
"Finalized placement on the Progress flight manifest is an exciting milestone for UrtheCast. Not only is it a requirement prior to launch, it is key to UrtheCast's mission," remarked Scott Larson, UrtheCast President and CEO. "In the meantime, UrtheCast's camera development remains on-track alongside the coordination of our ground station network and the UrtheCast web platform."
Upon launch aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket, the UrtheCast cameras will orbit the Earth in order to dock with the ISS, which orbits about 350 km above the Earth — a process that takes approximately 48 hours to complete from launch to docking.
The directors of the Russian ISS Program re-scheduled the anticipated launch date to accommodate the launch of the Olympic Torch into space in connection with Russia's 2014 winter Olympic games. UrtheCast understands that this will mark the first time the Olympic Torch has entered open space, on a spacewalk. The Russian ISS Program has also confirmed that the launch of UrtheCast's cameras will not be affected by the recent Proton rocket failure, as the Soyuz mission utilizes an independent launch pad.
