MILWAUKEE, Sept. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- With demand for web developers in Wisconsin at an all-time high, University of Wisconsin-Extension today announced the launch of its first coding bootcamp, in partnership with leading workforce accelerator Trilogy Education. Geared toward adult learners and working professionals, the Coding Boot Camp at UW-Extension teaches the front-end and back-end skills needed to become a proficient full stack developer. The 24-week, part-time program begins January 15, 2019, with two three-hour evening classes during the week (6:30 to 9:30 p.m.) and a four-hour class on Saturdays (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). Enrollment is now open at https://bootcamp.wisconsin.edu/coding.
"The Coding Boot Camp at UW-Extension will help working adults here in the Milwaukee area capitalize on the exploding demand for digital skills, while bridging regional hiring gaps. This program is a great option for adult learners looking to change careers, secure promotions, re-enter the workforce, or diversify their skill sets," said John Stone, Senior Associate Dean of Continuing Education at the University of Wisconsin-Extension. "By leveraging Trilogy Education's market-driven platform, we're bringing adult learners in Milwaukee from all backgrounds and experience levels a pathway into the tech industry."
With the state unemployment rate at a record low of 2.9%, Wisconsin employers are hungry for skilled tech talent. In the past 12 months, Milwaukee-area employers alone struggled to fill more than 7,000 open roles requiring some level of coding ability. This mirrors national trends: web development ranks among the fastest growing professions in the U.S., with the number of roles set to increase by 24% by 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Pairing UW-Extension's strengths with Trilogy Education's market-driven coding and career curriculum offers students both the competence and confidence to succeed in the fast-changing technology industry. The program's curriculum covers the basics of coding, algorithms and data structure plus intensive training in JavaScript, Node.js, HTML, CSS, jQuery, Java and more. No previous training or experience is required, but applicants should have an understanding of coding basics.
"Together, the University of Wisconsin-Extension and Trilogy Education have a vision to create a stronger digital workforce and a stronger Milwaukee. Tech talent attracts businesses, spurs innovation and investment, and impacts long-term economic growth. Through this partnership, we're bringing working adults here in Milwaukee the opportunity to pursue meaningful careers in technology and helping build a city that can thrive into the future," said Trilogy Education CEO and Founder Dan Sommer.
In addition to classroom instruction, students will spend 20 hours a week on outside projects, homework, and experiential learning activities. They'll also build a professional project portfolio to showcase their abilities and hone their competitive edge in the employment market. Students will also receive a range of career-planning services, portfolio reviews, recruiting assistance and extensive staff support.
Boot Camp students will gain skills to develop dynamic end-to-end web applications, as well as receive a Certificate in Full-Stack Web Development from University of Wisconsin-Extension.
