University of the South to Confer Honorary Degree on David Beckmann
WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Bread for the World President Rev. David Beckmann will be presented with an honorary doctor of civil law degree on May 15 from Sewanee, The University of the South.
"It is a tremendous honor to receive this recognition from Sewanee, an esteemed university and home to one of the nation's most distinguished Schools of Theology," said Rev. Beckmann. "I congratulate the graduates and challenge them to become powerful agents of change especially in the lives of poor and hungry people around the world."
Beckmann, along with former first lady Barbara Bush, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham, and retired Lt. Col. Elizabeth "Bibby" Smith, will be presented with honorary degrees during the university's baccalaureate ceremony in Sewanee, TN.
"David Beckmann's work is fundamentally about the fusion of economics, politics, and faith, and in this way he reflects the ideal of a Sewanee education: to cultivate men and women to live with grace, integrity and a reverent concern for the world," said Joel Cunningham, Sewanee vice chancellor and president. "We look forward to recognizing Mr. Beckmann for his enduring commitment to reducing hunger and poverty, and for his many and meaningful contributions to our world."
Beckmann has been president of Bread for the World since 1991. His new book, Exodus from Hunger: We Are Called to Change the Politics of Hunger, is being published by Westminster John Knox Press and will be available in October 2010.
Other recent recipients of the honorary doctor of civil law degree from Sewanee include Walter E. Massey, president emeritus of Morehouse College; David L. Warren, president of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and creator of CampusCares; Akwii-Wangusa, Anglican observer at the United Nations; and Voorhees College president and civil rights activist Dr. Cleveland L. Sellers Jr.
Sewanee: The University of the South, is located in Tennessee and has 1,500 undergraduate students and approximately 100 seminarians.
