WEST HAVEN, Conn., Nov. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The University of New Haven's Model United Nations Team, competing against 1,000 students from 67 universities from around the world Nov. 3-5 won eight awards – more than any other college.
The University's team, participating in the international competition at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, in Washington, D.C., won one of 12 top team awards for Outstanding Delegation, four outstanding position paper awards, and three outstanding delegate awards.
Teams at the Model UN competition represent countries on UN committees to explore and research their countries' stance on global issues such as overfishing, narcotics trafficking, national security, refugees, urbanization, and others. At the competition, they are asked to grapple with real world problems by discussing, debating, and voting on resolutions to solve them.
The University of New Haven students were assigned last April to represent Brazil and have spent the last five months researching and writing about that country's positions on a variety of issues. Then, at the Model UN, just like at the real United Nations, student delegates representing various countries debate the issues and vote on resolutions to solve the problem.
Sixteen students, eight from the College of Arts and Sciences and eight from the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences, represented the University of New Haven.
