COLLEGE PARK, Md., Feb. 5, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The University of Maryland has named Jewel Washington as the new Assistant Vice President of University Human Resources. In this role, Washington will lead a group of dedicated professionals to provide the highest levels of service and human resources programs to the University and its employees.
Since 2000, Washington has served in various leadership roles in human resources at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and UNM Hospitals, most recently as interim vice president. She brings more than 25 years of progressive human resource experience in a university and academic medical center, as well as having run her own human resources consulting business.

"Jewel will lead the university's human resource team, providing a new, creative vision, building strong relationships, and increasing efficiencies and overall well-being of the department. As interim vice president at UNM, Washington oversaw all human resource functions for more than 3,000 faculty and 6,000 staff members. She provided consultation on human resource-related issues; established organizational goals and operating procedures; and developed philosophies, approaches and policies on employee relations initiatives.
Washington's professional accomplishments at UNM include implementing a human resources Business Partner model to better meet the university's needs; improving recruiting, hiring and other human resource processes; overseeing the design of a staff performance review system; establishing a university-wide required training program; and leading a metrics-based transformation to best practices.
Jewel holds a bachelor's degree in psychology, guidance and counseling from Eastern New Mexico University and a master of arts in human resources development from Webster University. She has certification in a variety of leadership development instruments, including Development Dimensions International (DDI), Myers Briggs, and Blanchard's Situational Leadership. Jewel was active in her community as a facilitator to community groups and is a past board member of Greater Albuquerque Habitat for Humanity.
