University of Kentucky College of Dentistry Adds Regenerative LANAP® Protocol
CERRITOS, Calif., Jan. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry (UKCD) is the latest educational institution to integrate the regenerative LANAP® and LAPIP™ protocols into its postgraduate periodontics program. Through this collaboration with Millennium Dental Technologies, Inc. (MDT) and The Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD), UKCD joins an elite group of universities to acknowledge the protocols' role in the future of periodontitis treatment.
"Adding this advanced technology to our periodontics program was a logical step for University of Kentucky," commented Mohanad Al-Sabbagh DDS, MS, Division Chief of Periodontology and Program Director of Post-Graduate Program in Periodontology at UKCD. "As the field of periodontics continues to evolve, it is important for our students and their future patients to be at the forefront of evidence-based and scientifically validated protocols."
Only the PerioLase® MVP-7™ dental laser for the LANAP protocol has been awarded FDA clearance for True Periodontal Regeneration – regeneration of new cementum, new periodontal ligaments and new alveolar bone. The protocol is taught by Certified Instructors at the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD) via live patient, clinical, hands-on courses.
The inaugural UKCD Laser BootCamp® training at took place August 9-11, 2017, overseen by UKCD Associate Professor and Program Director Graduate Periodontology, Dolphus R. Dawson, DMD, MS, MPH. Dr. Dawson completed the rigorous IALD Certified Instructor training program in 2016.
University of Kentucky's addition of the LANAP and LAPIP protocols follows previous educational collaboration agreements with Rutgers University, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Army in advancing the standard of care for treating periodontitis and peri-implantitis. More universities and academic institutions are expected to be added to this list in the near future.
"Consistency is the key to clinicians' success in applying the LANAP protocol, which is why both the on-campus training at University of Kentucky and at the IALD are standardized and calibrated," remarks Dawn M. Gregg, DDS, CEO & Training Director for the IALD. "Our training is a unique, best-in-dentistry continuum. By using a hands-on method with live patients, we ensure the highest caliber experience for students, continuing the legacy of the LANAP protocol far into the future."
"As these partnerships with several world-class universities and institutions have shown, the field of periodontics is rapidly embracing the need for a more effective gum disease treatment, both with regards to patient acceptance and results," states Robert H. Gregg II, DDS, Millennium Dental Technologies' co-founder and LANAP® protocol inventor. "The goal of the LANAP protocol has always been to put the patient's needs first. Patients want to save their teeth but avoid painful surgeries. With the FDA clearance for True Periodontal Regeneration, LANAP surgery gives patients hope for hopeless teeth."
