CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- University of Iowa Health Care (UI Health Care), recognized as one of the best academic medical centers in the nation, recently joined the TriNetX global health research network, which provides access to industry-sponsored clinical trial opportunities.
In the first six months, UI Health Care was provided access to over 40 clinical trial opportunities from biopharmaceutical companies and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) on the network.
"UI Health Care increased the rate of clinical trial opportunities since becoming active on the TriNetX network," said Boyd Knosp, Associate Dean for Information Technology at UI Health Care. "This is good news for our researchers and our patients seeking leading-edge care."
Healthcare organizations, biopharmaceutical companies and CROs collaborate using the TriNetX network to improve local research, enhance protocol design, select study sites, and identify eligible patients for clinical trials. Members can access TriNetX Live to analyze patient populations and perform "what-if" analyses in real-time. Users of the platform are presented with aggregate views, but each data point in the TriNetX network can be traced to healthcare organizations who have the ability to identify individual patients, allowing clinical researchers to develop virtual patient cohorts that can then be re-identified for potential recruitment into a clinical trial.
UI Health Care is Iowa's only comprehensive, tertiary-level academic medical center and a regional referral center. It is comprised of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and University of Iowa Physicians. The enterprise serves more than 35,000 patients for in-patient care and handles more than 58,000 emergency department visits annually. UI Health Care also operates more than 200 outpatient clinics that see nearly one million patient visits annually.
Approximately 250 UI Health Care principal investigators, researchers, and staff received extensive training and now utilize TriNetX to conduct research on behalf of fellow Iowans.
"TriNetX provides our scientists and trainees with the capability to explore de-identified patient data and plan original research projects," said Knosp. "The future capabilities described in the TriNetX roadmap also align with UI Health Care's strategy for clinical and translational research."
"We are excited to see the quick results UI Health Care has experienced since joining the network," said Rachael Thomas Higgins, Vice President of Account Management at TriNetX. "We look forward to helping them reach their clinical trial participation and internal research goals."
