University of Colorado at Boulder Wins Tech Accelerator of the Year at FSTEC

CHICAGO, Sept. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The campus dining services department of University of Colorado at Boulder was named Restaurant Business' 2017 Tech Accelerator of the Year, an honor recognizing the foodservice industry's leading innovator in technology.

The advances in CU Boulder's new dining facility, the Village Center Dining and Community Commons, extend beyond smartphones and back-office systems. Among its high-tech features are electrochromatic windows that darken in response to sunlight, a biodigester that breaks down garbage into wastewater, stationary "blender bikes" that students pedal to mix their own smoothies, and video monitors in the kitchen that double as space for cooking classes.

The broad range of amenities aim to create an eco-friendly, community-focused gathering place for students.

CU Boulder was selected for the top technology honor by the editors of Restaurant Business from among influential innovators in three categories: limited service, full service and nontraditional. The university's foodservice department was the honoree in the nontraditional category. Cava, the Mediterranean fast-casual chain, was the winner in limited service, and BJ's Restaurants was the winner among full-service restaurants.

CU Boulder's selection was announced at the FSTEC Conference in Anaheim, Calif., where more than 1,000 restaurant technology experts gathered to learn about the latest innovations in their fields.
