University of California, Berkeley Captures Scientific Research Title In Thomson Reuters Metrics Mania Tournament
Cal-Berkeley becomes research champion for the second time in four years
PHILADELPHIA, April 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today crowned the University of California, Berkeley the 2016 champion of Metrics Mania. This is Cal-Berkeley's second Metrics Mania title in the last four years (2013).
As millions of fans get set to watch Villanova University take on the University of North Carolina in Houston for the national championship this evening, the world of academia anointed a new champion in scientific research. The competition took the field of 68 teams that qualified for the Division 1 NCAA men's basketball tournament and used the current year's bracket to pit the schools against one another in a contest of another kind: to find out who is the most influential producer of scientific research.
The winners of each of the six rounds of Metrics Mania were determined biweekly from March 17 through April 3 using Thomson Reuters InCites™, the leading web-based research analytics platform enabling institutions to measure research output and impact, monitor trends, and benchmark performance against peers at the individual, departmental, and global levels. Wisconsin, Yale, and Iowa State rounded out the Metrics Mania final four.
With their win in this year's tournament, it makes Cal-Berkeley the first repeat winner. Previous year's champions include Harvard (2015), and Stanford (2014).
"Throughout Metrics Mania, we used proprietary scientific data and analytics gleaned from InCites to offer a unique perspective into how the participating institutions compare in terms of research prowess," said Jessica Turner, global head of Thomson Reuters Government & Academia. "Having now won for the second time in four years, it is clear Cal-Berkeley is on its way to building a scientific dynasty, one that will allow their graduates to help propel the country into the next decade and beyond. Everyone at Thomson Reuters congratulates them on their victory."
