The university conducted a rigorous evaluation process that included reviewing other discovery services in the market. The University of Arizona is the latest member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to select the Summon service, which is now used by more than one third of academic ARL libraries.
"The continued innovation with Summon demonstrates Serials Solutions' commitment to meeting the ever-changing nature of today's users," said Cheryl Cuillier, manager of the Discovery Project Team, University of Arizona. "Serials Solutions provides excellent customer support and Summon integrates nicely with our existing Serials Solutions products. We believe that Summon is the best choice for our library."
"Partnering with libraries has been foundational in developing a discovery service that makes the research process easier, faster and better," said John Law, vice president, discovery services, Serials Solutions. "With Summon 2.0, we've introduced groundbreaking and innovative features that deliver value to the library, including new ways for librarians to engage with users. Powerful navigation and contextual guidance features built into the Summon service significantly advance the research experience for both novice and experienced researchers."
Used by more than 600 libraries in more than 40 countries, the Summon service is the first and only discovery service based on a unified index of content, leveraging its unique "match and merge" technology to combine rich metadata and full text from multiple sources to ultimately make items more discoverable. In just three years, the Summon unified index has grown from 200 million items to more than one billion items – with the vast majority of article and book content full-text searchable.
