LOS ANGELES, Oct. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Bullying is an epidemic that has plagued our country for years. The Internet has increased its effects as people shoot cyber-bullets at each other's confidence and self-esteem while hiding behind their computer screens. As part of Unity Day, seven Los Angeles children are bravely speaking out to empower the world to be kind online.
Kids in the House interviewed seven children from the Los Angeles area who have experienced bullying, as well as leading bullying experts, to explore how to stop bullying, and to get clear advice on what to do when it happens.
"I've been asking myself: Why are so many negative comments posted online every day, and how are kids affected by seeing all this negativity?" says producer and director Leana Greene. "How do you explain to your child the importance of being kind online, when it's hard to find even one YouTube video without a negative comment? Suicide is the third leading cause of death in young people, resulting in 4,400 deaths every year [according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention]. We have to teach our children that words can kill, both in person and online."
The children in the video give a voice to the cost of bullying. The pain they have experienced is evident as you watch the video and hear their stories. Their courage in speaking out is a great example to kids across the nation on how we need to join together to end bullying.
Los Angeles mother Zoeie Durham has created a united front with her children to support them against the bullies at their school. Her son has been especially affected by bullies as he endures physical and verbal attacks at school every day. However, Zoeie will not back down and continues to fight for her children daily.
"I refuse to have them fail because of their environment," says Zoeie.
Kids In The House joins Zoeie and kids across America today as they unite together to end bullying. Words can kill, but we have the power to make a difference.
