In recent years the issue of global climate change has come to the forefront of the values and focus of the College. Under the leadership of President Mulkey, a scientist with an international reputation for research and scholarship, the College is strengthening its focus. Curricular majors and programs across the curriculum will focus on the emerging field of Sustainability Science, which probes interactions between global, social and human systems, the complex mechanisms that lead to the degradation of these systems, and concomitant risks to human well-being. He has made training students for careers in service to the mitigation of global climate change a unifying focus.
President Mulkey's Inaugural Address will focus on the reality of anthropogenic (created by people or caused by human activity) climate change. He will frame this issue as an ethical imperative for colleges and universities across the globe.
The event program will include a variety of presentations by Alumni, Students, Faculty, Staff and Unity area community leaders. Poet and writer Michele Leavitt, wife of President Mulkey, will read a poem encapsulating the theme of the day and hopes for the future of Unity College.
There will be a receiving line and reception at the UCCPA immediately following the inauguration.
