United/US Airways Deal Won't Fly Without Flight Attendants
Union will Not Support Any Deal Intended to Distract from Contract Negotiations
CHICAGO, April 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO (AFA-CWA) at United Airlines will not support any deal that seeks to distract from contract negotiations for the pay, healthcare, working conditions and retirement security flight attendants are due. The Union is resolute that any business combination must work for the flight attendants with improved pay, healthcare, retirement, work rules and job security.
"United Airlines needs to get its own house in order before attempting to hoist the problems management has created onto another business deal. We will oppose any transaction that serves to delay, disrupt or impede our efforts to improve compensation and working conditions," said Greg Davidowitch, AFA-CWA President at United Airlines.
Just this week nearly 2000 flight attendants picketed and leafleted passengers at 15 airports around the world for the second time this year to protest the 3-month overdue contract improvements due to them after years of draconian concessions. Flight attendants are angry that they are working at 1994 wage levels in the year 2010 and working 48% more compared with 2002 schedules and staffing.
"Flight Attendants have a voice in our workplace, and we know how to use it," stated Davidowitch. "We will enforce our rights under the law and our legally binding Contract which provides us significant job protections within any business combination."
More than 55,000 flight attendants, including the 16,000 flight attendants at United, join together to form AFA, the world's largest flight attendant union. AFA is part of the 700,000 member strong Communications Workers of America, AFL-CIO. Visit us at www.unitedafa.org.
