United Way of the National Capital Area Hosts Free Health Screening
Get Checked from Head to Toe.
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On January 17, 2011, United Way of the National Capital Area teams up with area organizations to ensure a healthy start to 2011. The start of a new year could mean the start of a new you. United Way NCA member charity, United Community Ministries will host the FREE health screening from 10am-4pm at 7511 Fordson Road, Alexandria, VA.
United Way NCA is committed to help raise awareness of the importance of screenings, tests and education for health issues and the vast number of organizations available to help area residents. In the report, Portrait Project 2010, released by the Washington Women's Area Foundation, the evidence is clear… women in our region have health issues at rates that often surpass the national average. Between 2006 and 2008, obesity rates increased in women in our region. AIDS cases for women in the District of Columbia were almost twelve times the national rate, and in Maryland it is almost three times the national rate. But women are not the only ones suffering from health issues. United Way's 2-1-1 health and human services help line continues to show healthcare as a leading issue for area callers, ranking it the second most frequently requested service in Virginia.
Free screenings will be conducted by registered nurses, doctors and volunteers for important health concerns for everything from your head to your toes. Join us for checks on glucose, body mass index (BMI), and body mechanics (physical therapy), screenings on blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep apnea, and prostate cancer, and exams for vision, HIV, feet and breasts. Nutrition counseling is also available.
Area participants joining the United Way NCA include Kaiser Permanente, National Kidney Foundation, Get Checked 4 Life, Dr. Yael Varnado and our host site, United Community Ministries.
Health is an important issue in our area and United Way is committed to see our community get healthy.
