BERWICK, Pa., April 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Unit 2 at the Susquehanna nuclear plant in Luzerne County, Pa., resumed generating safe, reliable electricity to the power grid on Sunday, April 9 after completing its scheduled refueling and maintenance outage.
"Our investments in the plant's infrastructure enable Susquehanna to continue to provide reliable, zero-carbon energy to our customers," said Brad Berryman, site vice president. "We replaced essential equipment and performed necessary maintenance, while maintaining our primary focus on safety. Susquehanna employees were aided by more than 1,800 supplemental contractors and collectively completed the outage without any reportable injuries."
Susquehanna's nuclear professionals replaced approximately one third of the Unit's uranium fuel, replaced three large heat exchangers and performed hundreds of other maintenance activities and upgrades. The Susquehanna plant's two generating units have planned refueling and maintenance outages every 24 months.
"Our team also completed final modification to the Unit 2 low pressure turbine, which is the final step in a multi-year project to address turbine blade performance issues," said Berryman. "The Susquehanna team delivered a highly successful outage and met our business objectives of reconnecting to the electric grid on time and under budget."
The Susquehanna plant, located about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by Susquehanna Nuclear LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Talen Energy Corporation, and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by Susquehanna Nuclear. For information, visit www.susquehannanuclear.com.
