Unisys Unveils LineSight™, an Advanced Analytics-Based Solution to Dramatically Improve Accuracy in Assessing Border Security Threats
New solution uses predictive data analytics and machine learning to speed up passage for low- or no-threat passengers and cargo
BLUE BELL, Pa., March 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced the availability of LineSight™, new software that uses advanced data analytics and machine learning to deliver dramatically improved accuracy to enable border agents to make critical, on-the-spot decisions about whether to trigger closer inspection of travelers or cargo shipments before admitting them into a country – at the same time reducing the number of false positives that waste resources and delay the clearance process for legitimate travelers and cargo.
Leveraging technology and expertise from Unisys' more than 15 years of helping to protect borders around the world, the solution uses advanced targeting algorithms to continuously ingest and analyze high volumes of data from multiple sources and to flag potential threats in near real time. For travelers crossing borders, LineSight assesses risk from the initial intent to travel and refines that risk assessment as more information becomes available – beginning with a traveler's visa application to travel, reservation, ticket purchase, seat selection, check-in and arrival. Similarly, LineSight provides the most current risk assessment capabilities to enable effective early intervention related to cargo shipments.
"Many legacy border security solutions identify potentially risky travelers and cargo based on previously known threats – which is kind of like driving a car and only using your rear view mirror," said Mark Forman, global head of Unisys Public Sector. "And due to the overwhelming amount of data that has to be reviewed, as well as limited budgets and resources in governments, these old solutions can't keep up. LineSight allows border agents around the world to more effectively accelerate movement of passengers and cargo without compromising safety. The result is faster and better-informed border clearance and a safer process for us all."
Keeping Things Moving, Improving Accuracy Over Time
According to the World Tourism Organization, international tourist arrivals grew by a remarkable 7 percent in 2017 to reach a total of more than 1.3 billion – a number that is expected to increase by up to 5 percent in 2018. At the same time, international air freight is experiencing annual double-digit growth. While fewer than one in 1,000 travelers and shipments poses an actual threat, governments need tools to prevent entry of illicit drug shipments, people traffickers, weapon smugglers, counterfeit goods, biosecurity threats and terrorists.
LineSight can ingest multiple high-volume transaction streams while generating risk assessments in less than two seconds. This near real time response is essential for supporting immediate decision-making at early points of intervention. In addition, LineSight does not depend solely on pre-defined pattern matching rules; it also includes predictive analytics and machine learning that allow the system to learn from experience and automatically generate new rules and algorithms to continuously improve assessment accuracy over time.
"Governments around the world are facing enormous challenges related to protecting their borders against growing threats like drug trafficking and terrorism," said Alison Brooks, research director, smart cities and public safety, IDC. "They will need to leverage technologies like advanced data analytics and machine learning to stay ahead of adversaries with the ability to predict threats before they occur."
Unisys has long been a recognized leader in providing the technology used to protect borders around the world. In addition to its border security work for U.S. Customs and Border Protection assessing travelers and cargo crossing into the U.S., Unisys designed and built the biometrics framework and applications used by Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection in cooperation with other countries and agencies to identity visa applicants and fight visa fraud. Unisys also supports the European Commission and new EU member states with the Schengen Information System and related visa information systems to facilitate the movement of people between Schengen countries.
