Unisys Helps Department of Energy Idaho National Laboratory Complete Transition to Cloud-Based Email and Collaboration System
Energy research lab moves nearly 5,000 users to Google Apps for Government
BLUE BELL, Pa., Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced the successful completion of a project to transition nearly 5,000 users at the Department of Energy's Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to the Google Apps for Government email and collaboration platform.
INL expects the new tools to improve collaboration among its employees through better sharing of information technology infrastructure, resources and applications. The solution gives employees secure access to email and data while reducing costs, allowing INL personnel to perform vital work more efficiently with improved system uptime and availability.
The transition was performed under a contract awarded to Unisys in August 2011 by the Battelle Energy Alliance LLC, the Department of Energy's management and operations contractor at the Idaho National Laboratory. The INL is one of the 10 multi-program national laboratories responsible for operations within the Department of Energy.
"The Google Apps for Government solution provided an opportunity to enhance the lab capabilities in messaging and really pave the way to the types of collaboration our employees really want," said Denise Stephens, chief information officer, INL. "The move to cloud computing also allows the lab to invest in the right capability, which allows our workers to better focus on the most vital elements of our mission while cutting costs related to operating and maintaining our IT infrastructure."
This news follows an announcement in January of this year that Unisys helped to complete a similar transition to Google Apps for Government for 25,000 users at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Unisys also worked with the U.S. General Services Administration to successfully transition all of its users to the Google Apps for Government platform.
"Unisys is proud to have helped INL transition its email and collaboration tools to the cloud," said Anthony Hess, group vice president, civilian agencies, Unisys Federal Systems. "INL users are reporting that they are very happy with these new tools, and the program serves as an example of what the future can hold for other organizations both within the DOE and throughout government."
