Unisys Helps Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Data Center Become One of the First Federal Data Centers to Obtain ISO/IEC 20000 Certification
Certification measures data center best practices as defined by global standards organizations
BLUE BELL, Pa., Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Mid-Tier Data Center in Atlanta, as managed by Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS), was recently certified as one of the first U.S. federal government data centers compliant with the ISO/IEC 20000 standard for best practices related to delivering managed services that meet business and customer requirements.
With this certification, the CDC data center stands as one of only 33 organizations in the United States to achieve compliance with the standard.
The ISO/IEC 20000 certification, presented by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is the first internationally recognized standard aimed at IT service management, which is the principal measure of IT quality within an organization.
Unisys, selected by the CDC in 2003 to help run the Atlanta data center, was instrumental in managing the data center staff and processes necessary to achieve the certification.
The CDC Mid-Tier Data Center in Atlanta hosts many of the applications that are critical to the agency's mission to create the expertise, information and tools needed by U.S. citizens and communities to protect their health. For example, the data center hosts the CDC's website content, which provides critical and urgent health information to millions of medical practitioners and other individuals each month.
"By achieving ISO/IEC 20000-compliance at our data center, we have been benchmarked as a leader in data center management practices, and our clients can be assured that our business processes have been ranked as among the best in the world," said James Seligman, chief information officer at CDC. "This certification attests to the capabilities of our center to deliver world-class service to our clients within CDC and to the many partners and constituencies they serve."
This ISO/IEC 20000 certification represents the third one with which Unisys has been associated. Two Unisys organizations, Unisys Federal Systems and the Unisys Global Outsourcing and Infrastructure Services group, have also achieved ISO 20000 certifications.
In February of this year, Unisys Federal Systems announced it had achieved ISO/IEC 27001:2005 certification for identifying and managing information security risks internally and for company clients. Additionally, Unisys Federal Systems announced it had extended its ISO/IEC 20000-1:2005 certification to include all of its service offerings.
"We congratulate CDC on obtaining this certification, a distinction achieved by only 33 organizations in the United States," said Ted Davies, president of Unisys Federal Systems. "We are proud of the role played by Unisys in assisting the CDC in earning this certification and will continue to work with the agency to provide superior service to CDC data center clients."
