Unions, Constituents To Protest Anti-Worker Northeastern Pennsylvania Lawmaker
Rally outside Rep. Barletta's office to highlight harmful legislative agenda
HAZLETON, Pa., Aug. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Constituents from U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta's congressional district will join with leaders from the nation's largest federal employee union to protest the congressman's anti-worker legislative agenda on Wednesday.
The American Federation of Government Employees is participating in a rally outside Rep. Barletta's office to bring attention to policies being championed by the first-term legislator that would harm federal employees and taxpayers in Pennsylvania and across the country. The rally is part of AFGE's Fight Back campaign and the AFL-CIO's Summer of Accountability events, which are highlighting lawmakers who have voted to slash jobs and dismantle vital federal programs.
Rep. Barletta has voted to cut 10 percent of all federal jobs in Pennsylvania and across the country. This would mean a loss of nearly 960 jobs in his district or more than $38 million in lost revenue. He has voted for a federal budget that would kill more than 2.5 million jobs across the country, including nearly 20,000 infrastructure jobs and 85,600 health care jobs in Pennsylvania alone. Meanwhile, Barletta has approved giving $2.9 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and corporations, while cutting funding for programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
