Union Strike Approved for Ingevity Specialty Chemicals Plant
COVINGTON, Va., May 10, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AWPPW Local 675 members have conducted a strike authorization vote with a 96% approval to authorize the Local Union Bargaining Board to call a strike if its ongoing negotiations with Ingevity Corporation's Covington Specialty Chemicals Plant does not result in a successful offer.
The Union membership previously rejected the Company's initial offer for a new contract by 98%. The Union and Ingevity met for a week in February 2017 with the assistance of a Federal Mediator, with no progress being attained in the talks. The parties are scheduled to resume talks the week of June 26, 2017.
The Covington Specialty Chemicals Plant produces high grade activated carbon primarily used by the auto industry.
AWPPW Local 675 also represents the workers at the WestRock Covington Paper Mill and is currently engaged in ongoing negotiations for a new Labor Agreement with WestRock.
The Union states that the major concessions demanded by WestRock include healthcare, premium pay and changes to seniority all of which present barriers to reaching an agreement. The Covington WestRock Mill produces bleach board and bleached packaging papers.
The AWPPW is affiliated with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters union.
