Union president to discuss DoD furloughs, budget cuts at local air base

Leader to meet with furloughed workers at Selfridge Air National Guard Base

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich., Aug. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The head of the American Federation of Government Employees will visit Selfridge Air National Guard Base on Wednesday, Aug. 7, to meet with furloughed employees.

AFGE National President J. David Cox Sr. will deliver a speech at the base in which he will discuss how sequestration and budget cuts harm federal workers and local economies and jeopardize the Department of Defense's ability to perform its mission. He will also take questions from the media during his visit.

"Unless Congress ends sequestration now, these extreme budget cuts are going to continue for another nine years – decimating our nation's military capability, our fragile economic recovery and the lives of millions of hardworking men and women in both the public and private sectors," Cox said.

AFGE is the largest federal employee union, representing more than 670,000 federal and D.C. government workers nationwide. Across Michigan, more than 8,300 federal employees belong to AFGE, including nearly 3,000 at the Department of Defense.
