Union of Unemployed Credits Reid for Jobs Bill Passage
WASHINGTON, March 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Union of Unemployed today congratulated Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) for overcoming sustained opposition and securing passage of a jobs bill that contains an extension of unemployment insurance.
"We salute Sen. Reid for achieving the first two steps of his jobs agenda," said Ur Union of Unemployed Executive Director Rick Sloan. "More than 30 million Americans are still unemployed or underemployed and it is urgent that the third step -- health care reform and tax incentives -- is quickly passed and signed into law."
Reid introduced and helped steer the 'American Workers, State and Business Relief Act' (H.R. 4213) to passage this week in the Senate. The bill extends unemployment insurance, provides subsidies for COBRA health insurance and was approved by a filibuster-proof vote of 62-36.
"The report that 36,000 Americans lost their jobs in February is not encouraging news, regardless of how many business economists may applaud it," said Sloan. "The nation remains gripped by a Grave Recession and the need for relief is as strong as ever."
