Union Leader Responds to President's Budget Proposal

Proposed cuts to programs and services could affect American public

WASHINGTON, Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- American Federation of Government Employees President John Gage today issued the following response to President Obama's proposed fiscal 2012 budget:

"AFGE is pleased that President Obama's budget does not propose cutting health insurance or retirement programs for federal employees. Any reduction in these benefits would have severe consequences for federal employees, who already have been subjected to a two-year pay freeze. However, we are well aware that some lawmakers are pushing for more draconian cuts. We urge President Obama to hold firm against any cuts that would diminish services to the American public.

"In addition, we are concerned about what impact the administration's proposed cuts in federal programs and services will have on the American public. Many Americans rely on the federal government more than ever during severe economic downturns. Congress must think long and hard before cutting programs and services that extend a helping hand to our nation's most vulnerable citizens."
