Union, Constituents to Challenge Anti-Worker Temple, Texas Lawmaker
Rally outside Rep. Carter's Texas office to highlight harmful legislative agenda
TEMPLE, Texas, Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Constituents from U.S. Rep. John Carter's congressional district will join with leaders from the nation's largest federal employee union to highlight the congressman's anti-worker legislative agenda on Thursday.
The American Federation of Government Employees is helping to organize the town hall meeting in Rep. Carter's congressional district to bring attention to policies being championed by the legislator that would harm federal employees and constituents in Texas and across the country. The forum is part of AFGE's Fight Back campaign and the AFL-CIO's Summer of Accountability events.
Rep. Carter has voted to cut 10 percent of all federal jobs in Texas and across the country. This would mean a loss of more than 1,000 jobs in his district, or $40 million in lost revenue. He has also supported policies to cut funding for programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid while rejecting efforts to raise revenue by increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans and corporations.
