UniHealth Foundation Awards Palliative Care Grant to Good Samaritan Hospital
LOS ANGELES, June 29, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- UniHealth Foundation awards Good Samaritan Hospital a $300,000 grant to establish an inpatient Palliative Care Program in its intensive care unit and cardiovascular intensive care unit. Palliative care is specialized medical care that provides treatment and relief of pain, symptoms, and stress for people with serious illness. It does not replace primary or concurrent treatment but works together with them to improve quality of life for the patient and their family.
The grant will fund an interdisciplinary team made of existing Good Samaritan Hospital staff members. The staff will launch a service for the hospital's diverse population that will improve care by addressing unmet pain and suffering, complex end of life issues, and incomplete advance care planning.
Nathan Hashimoto, M.D. and Therese Trebaol, Ph.D. will lead the Palliative Care Program at Good Samaritan Hospital with support from Medical Director Harry Rosen, M.D.
First opened in 1885, Good Samaritan Hospital is a 408-bed tertiary care facility offering some of the most comprehensive care in Los Angeles including cardiac, orthopedics, oncology, ophthalmology, kidney stone, and women's services. Good Samaritan Hospital offers several surgical programs including cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery; neurosciences and neurosurgery program including spine surgery; orthopedic surgical program including sports medicine, major joint replacements and spine; advanced retinal surgery; transfusion-free medicine and surgery; and emergency services.
