Unified Incident Command and Decision Support (UICDS) System Deployed to the Cloud
SAIC Demonstrates UICDS Cloud-Based Functionality During National Level Exercise for 2011
MCLEAN, Va., June 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) (NYSE: SAI) announced today that the Unified Incident Command and Decision Support (UICDS) system has been successfully deployed to the cloud. The deployment, in support of the "UICDS Technology Showcase" during the National Level Exercise for 2011 (NLE 11), demonstrates UICDS applicability and compatibility with cloud-based technologies.
UICDS is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate, and is being executed under a prime contract with SAIC. The system enables police, fire, emergency medical and management, and other response organizations to use incident management technologies to share information and collaborate to help protect, respond, and recover from natural disasters, and other technological and terrorist incidents.
"Deploying UICDS to the cloud for the UICDS NLE 11 Technology Showcase demonstrates the flexibility of the system's architecture," said Chip Mahoney, SAIC UICDS project manager. "Cloud deployments can be very helpful to first responders and emergency managers, providing scalability during large scale events such as earthquakes as well as access to UICDS information sharing to those who lack the IT infrastructure but have a need to collaborate with their counterparts."
During the NLE 11, a catastrophic earthquake impacting the Central United States is simulated. The UICDS team then used NLE 11 incidents and responses to carry out a parallel technology showcase enabling collaboration across a nationally deployed network, representing a regional UICDS deployment with participation from the Federal Government, technology providers and others.
"The UICDS NLE 11 Technology Showcase clearly demonstrated that information sharing is all about collaborative content," said Jim Morentz, SAIC UICDS director of outreach. "The UICDS role is not to prescribe how people view information; rather, UICDS focuses on what data should be shared during an incident."
