FAIRFIELD, N.J., May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Salvatore DiMauro of The Bronx, New York was presented with the 2014 UNICO National Marconi Science Award and Medal by UNICO National President Michael Veselka at a gala award ceremony and dinner at the UNICO National Board Meeting in Chicago, IL attended by UNICO National officers and members from across the country. "It is such an honor for me, personally, on behalf of all of our members, to be able to present this award to you tonight," stated Veselka as he placed the UNICO National Marconi medal on Dr. DiMauro.

Dr. DiMauro, a world-renowned researcher in neuromuscular disorders, such as muscular dystrophy; mitochondrial and metabolic disorders; and, rare life-threatening genetic conditions, is Professor of Neurology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Associate Chair, Basic Research in the Department of Neurology at Columbia University. He has authored over 540 scientific papers; reviewed and edited over 300 books and has earned countless awards and recognitions from professional medical societies, universities and governments in dozens of countries worldwide.
First to identify specific biochemical deficiencies in humans related to certain neuromuscular conditions, Dr. DiMauro has made significant discoveries with respect to mitochondrial DNA and a wide array of mitochondrial diseases. His work has helped to save the lives of countless people, and especially children, around the world.

The Greater Ramsey New Jersey UNICO Chapter nominated Dr. DiMauro for the award. National Executive VP Richard D'Arminio was on hand to present Dr. DiMauro with a plaque from the Chapter.
In addition, a special presentation on behalf of Guglielmo Marconi University of Rome, Italy was made to Dr. DiMauro. In a congratulatory letter read at the ceremony, Prof. Alessandra Briganti, University Rector wrote "Guglielmo Marconi University recognizes the importance and special significance of this award. …Dr. Salvatore DiMauro is certainly worthy of this prestigious award." UNICO National and the University recently initiated a mutual collaboration, as part of UNICO National's continued commitment to advancing education. In the letter, Prof. Briganti commented on that relationship, "Guglielmo Marconi University is proud of its strategic partnership with UNICO National."
Dr. DiMauro stated, "My medical research and clinical efforts are put forth on behalf of children and adults with rare genetic disorders, searching for interventions that can improve the quality of life for those afflicted. This has been my life's passion. My CV will document the story of a humble physician and a man of science, but it cannot begin to describe what I am most proud of: The passion and commitment to improving the quality of life for those who cannot help themselves. With respect, that is the essence of the Marconi Award and the very reason for the existence of an organization like UNICO."
