Unemployed and Clueless - That's What College Grads Are When It Comes to Finding a Job, According to Don Philabaum, Author of New Career Skills Book for Recent Grads
Yet, parents can help!
CLEVELAND, May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Career expert and author offers free Webinars to help parents get up to speed on what their unemployed grads will need to do to get a job.
Nearly two million college graduates are spilling into an economy that is producing less than 150,000 jobs a month, according to Don Philabaum, the author of the new book "The Unemployed Grad, And What Parents Can Do About It." Grads need new career skills to find jobs!
With 80 percent of the class of 2012 expected to be unemployed on graduation day, Philabaum suggests parents need to step in and be a resource to their graduates during their first professional job search.
Philabaum, also the founder of http://www.talentmarks.com, suggests, "Graduates don't have a clue about how to look for a job. Surveys show grads don't spend enough time looking for a job, have not learned how to professionally use social media, or network with alumni on LinkedIn. Why? The college career center is no different than a club on most campuses. Students are not required to visit, or for that matter take ownership of their career."
As a result, according to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, during the senior year, 27.2% of grads will never visit the career center, 16.1% will visit once, and 18.2 percent will visit twice. That's barely enough time to get help on their resumes!
Besides these facts, a www.TalentMarks.com survey of the Class of 2011 showed that:
- 60 percent of the grads spent between 1-5 hours per week looking for job.
- 95 percent did not have a written job search plan.
Worse, at a time grads need career advising and help the most, they leave campus and the career center far behind. So it's up to parents who have a vested interest to step in and help!
Philabaum is offering 3 free Webinars on June 12th, 21st and 30th at 8:30 PM Eastern Daylight to share details from his book, The Unemployed Grad, where parents will pick up tips on how they can be a resource to their grads.
