Understory, Inc. Launches 'Weather Is Cool' Program To Advance Weather Education
Hands-on initiative designed to boost students' science knowledge rolls out in Dallas/Fort Worth
MADISON, Wis., Oct. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Understory, Inc., a weather network and analytics company, today announces the launch of its 'Weather Is Cool' program in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. The program is designed to give students across the country the opportunity to study and learn from advanced weather analytics obtained from Understory's unique RTi weather stations.
Each participating school receives an Understory RTi weather station, providing teachers and students with local ground-truth data – not available through traditional weather detection platforms – to utilize in conjunction with a unique Understory curriculum focused on understanding temperature and temperature patterns.
"As the weather is becoming increasingly severe, it plays a significant role in the world," said Alex Kubicek, CEO of Understory. "We want to encourage students to view how weather impacts their lives beyond the coveted 'snow day,' from the environment to the economy. Our unique data analytics help students view weather at the granular level and put their new understanding of these patterns to use as they continue to grow and weather conditions continue to evolve."
As part of the initiative, Understory offers a fundraising program to participating schools where Understory will donate $1.00 to the school for every download of the company's weather app, giving the communities access to real-time, hyper-local weather forecasts, alerts, school closures and delays.
'Weather Is Cool' is currently deployed in Dallas' Plano Independent School District and the Grand Prairie Independent School District, covering over 1.5 million homes within a two-mile radius of an RTi sensor. The program is expanding to Fort Worth schools in the coming weeks.
