UMaine Chancellor James Page Discusses Maine Educational Vision on TideSmart Talk with Stevoe
FALMOUTH, Maine, March 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In an interview today with TideSmart Talk with Stevoe, a weekly radio show that takes a macro approach towards society and culture, University of Maine System Chancellor James Page joined host and 2014 Maine gubernatorial candidate Steve Woods to discuss a vision for a more innovative, nimble and effective higher education system in Maine.
The show will air Saturday, March 30, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on News Talk WLOB 1310AM and will be live streamed at http://www.wlobradio.com. A podcast will be made available via iTunes or at http://www.tidesmartradio.com.
In an hour-long interview, Page and Woods discussed ways to streamline and improve Maine's higher education system. Reflecting on his first year as chancellor, Page talked about his goal of making education more accessible for Mainers. In January 2012, the University froze in-state tuition for the first time in 25 years.
"We have to find ways to make education more affordable for Maine residents," Page said.
Page, who is tasked with leading the repositioning of the UMaine system to meet 21st century higher education needs, also discussed his vision for attracting more students from out of state and the importance of building partnerships between universities and local business. Woods and Page also talked about Maine's challenges in attracting and maintaining young, innovative entrepreneurs.
"The University of Maine is a great sandbox for student innovation," Woods said. "We need to find ways to attract and keep these highly-educated students here so that they can then explore their ideas and launch business ventures that will have real economic benefit in our communities."
Also on the March 30 TideSmart Talk with Stevoe show, Woods was joined for an in-studio interview with Maine Center For Entrepreneurial Development Executive Director Don Gooding to further discuss ways to support economic growth throughout the state.
Since launching TideSmart Talk with Stevoe one year ago, Woods has hosted more than 100 high-profile guests including famed attorney F. Lee Bailey, mentalist The Amazing Kreskin, two-term Maine Governor John Baldacci, Shipyard Brewing Company President Fred Forsley, longtime Maine broadcast journalist Bill Green, Portland Sea Dogs Owner Bill Burke, Portland Mayor Michael Brennan, Former Chief of Staff to Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and current University of Maine Athletic Director Steve Abbott, Maine Senate President Justin Alfond and former congressman Tom Allen.
