NAPA, Calif., June 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- WineBid, the premier Internet auction for fine and rare wines, has three ultra-rare lots available this week: two single bottles and one two-bottle lot of 1934 Domaine De La Romanée-Conti Richebourg Vieux Cepages. All four bottles were removed from a temperature and humidity controlled cellar where they have been stored since they were acquired by the original owner. The bottles were wrapped in their original tissues, straw sleeves and butcher paper, keeping them in pristine condition.
The consignor is the widow of a Boston-area physician who collected primarily from France. The couple had a house in the Loire Valley and gained extensive knowledge of French wine from visiting wineries in various regions. Their cellar contained an impressive assortment of vintages from 1924–2003, with most of the rarest wines coming from the decades of the mid-20th century.
"Over the years I have had the good fortune to visit with collectors in their cellars, and I have found that every collection tells a story," said Sterling Roig, WineBid's Director of East Coast Sales. "This collection was obviously carefully built by a well-informed, highly discerning man with a passion for the best. He acquired wines from the world's most prestigious domaines and from remarkable producers whose names are known primarily to wine cognoscenti. In either case, he bought wines from the top terroirs in exceptional vintages. His research and taste were impeccable."
Vieux Cepages was the name given to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's oldest Richebourg vines, and like the vines used to produce the more familiar DRC Richebourg, the Vieux Cepages vines were never grafted to American rootstock. Vieux Cepages is vinified separately from the traditional Richebourg cuvée. These bottles are rarely available and are among the most coveted wines in the world. This auction ends July 3, 2016, at 7:00PM Pacific.
