UL Selected as the Sole Foreign Testing Center for New & Renewable Energy Systems by the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy
UL to Offer International and Local Certification Service for Large Scale Wind Turbine Generating Systems
SEOUL, South Korea, Aug. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science leader, was recently selected as the only foreign testing center for wind turbine generation systems over 750kW by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS), a division within the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MTIE). This designation by the Korean MTIE will allow global and local companies to earn not only local certification for Korea, but also international certification as it follows the IEC 61400-22 or GL Guideline.
UL purchased German based wind energy measurement and testing services companies DEWI GmbH and DEWI-OCC in 2012. DEWI GmbH has been assigned by the KATS as the testing body for power performance, power quality, acoustic noise/vibration and mechanical loads of large scale wind turbine generation systems (over 750kW). Meanwhile, DEWI-OCC was appointed as the overall design assessment body for the same type of turbine systems.
"We are pleased that UL was selected as the only foreign testing company by the Korean MTIE, as it verifies UL's leadership in certification of renewable energies," said Stephen Hwang, vice president and general manager of UL Korea. "As the new certification process will eliminate redundant testings and assessments by various testing centers in different markets, our customers will save time as well as costs in receiving the certifications."
The new certification process for large scale wind turbine generation systems is anticipated to begin on September 1, 2013. To learn more about UL's commitment to sustainable energy visit http://www.ul.com/global/eng/pages/newscience/sustainableenergy/.
