HDBaseT technology offers the unprecedented opportunity to merge full ultra-HD digital video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet and various control signals onto a single 100m 4-pair communications cable equipped with RJ-45 connectors. In addition, Power over HDBaseT (PoH) power-delivery technology has been developed to facilitate the powering of devices such as televisions and monitors up to 100 watts. UL has worked with HDBaseT Alliance to develop requirements and a certification program for Power over HDBaseT cables. Under the Certification program, UL tests the cables in accordance with the new UL 4299. The cables are tested in a specified bundle at 100 watts and the HDBaseT transmission parameters are verified at an elevated temperature based on the temperature measured during operation.
"As HDBaseT became the standard for the transmission of high-throughput content, it is critical for UL to help address the safety and performance issues with powering-over-cable installations. Through our comprehensive factory and market surveillance system, this certification program will help ensure a more compliant supply chain on an ongoing basis," said L.F. Lai, vice president and general manager of UL's Wire and Cable division.
"UL's PoH Certification program provides a straightforward solution for vendors, installers and end-users to future-proof their powering over cable installations to meet the high throughput demands as well as the safety requirements of today's proAV installations," said Ariel Sobelman, president, HDBaseT Alliance.
