GURGAON, India, Sept. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science organization, announced that UL's Gurgaon Laboratory is the first to be accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) to test under the new IS 9873 standards. The UL Gurgaon Laboratory, which is already accredited to IS 9873 part 1, 2 & 3, has revised its compliance scope to meet the 2017 amendments and added part 5, 6 and 9 to their capabilities.
This follows a significant announcement on September 1, 2017 made by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry regarding India's move to strengthen toy safety requirements. Manufacturers are now required to produce a test report for all imported toys to demonstrate compliance with the new IS 9873 standard. As the first test facility accredited to the new standard, UL offers toy manufacturers a head start getting into the Indian toy market.
"High profile toy recalls have increased consumer awareness about hazardous toys. Through toy safety testing, UL can help toy manufacturers protect young consumers while gaining market acceptance," said Alvin Fung, Vice-President & General Manager, Consumer & Retail Services Asia, UL.
"At UL, we take compliance very seriously. We rely on trusted regulatory intelligence to stay ahead of changes that impact us, as well as our clients," noted Sarbajeet Mukherjee, General Manager, Consumer & Retail Services, UL South Asia. "With this latest accreditation, toy manufacturers can trust their products are tested to comply with toy safety requirements for sale in India."
To promote toy safety awareness, UL will exhibit at Kids India 2017 (Booth A26) from September 20 – 22 and participate in the 'Safe Toys' panel discussion on September 20 at the Bombay Convention & Exhibition Centre, Mumbai.
