New Marks Combine Global UL Brand and Familiar ECOLOGO, GREENGUARD Names
MARIETTA, Ga., April 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories), announced today the launch of new certification marks for its portfolio of services, including the GREENGUARD and ECOLOGO certifications. The new marks consolidate ecolabels gained through acquisition, leverage UL's trusted brand, and bring additional clarity to the marketplace.

"The new UL Environment certification marks are a powerful tool offering consistency and connecting purchasers to healthier, more sustainable products they can trust," says Sara Greenstein, president of UL Environment. "The definition of safety is evolving to include the numerous ways in which products we interact with impact our health and the health of the environment. These marks demonstrate how UL has evolved to provide solutions to meet these new definitions of safety."
The new UL Environment marks feature a qualifying statement clearly explaining the basis for certification or validation; a URL connecting readers to a landing page further explaining the environmental service; and standard numbers for enhanced transparency. New marks are being provided to customers with ECOLOGO, GREENGUARD, and UL Environment certifications, as well those with Environmental Claims Validations. The new marks were distributed in April 2013 and will be rolled out on products, packaging, and marketing materials over the next 24 months. Purchasers will also continue to find ECOLOGO and GREENGUARD specified in purchasing policies as UL Environment's team works to update these references over the next 36 months.
The mark development was informed by market research, consultation with manufacturers, and demand for greater labelling transparency. The ECOLOGO mark's transition was additionally facilitated by the Environment Canada license agreement coming to a close in April 2013, ending its licensing interest in the ECOLOGO mark.
"Environment Canada's support was crucial to the early success of the ECOLOGO Certification program and has a global influence in the world of ecolabelling," says Greenstein. "UL Environment proudly accepts the opportunity to carry the familiar ECOLOGO name forward, thus continuing to drive market change and increase the demand for sustainable products in Canada and around the world."
UL Environment is generating awareness of its new marks among such audiences as architects, designers, and facility managers with a campaign that spans into 2014. To learn more about the new marks and UL Environment's services, visit www.ul.com/environment.
