U.K.'s Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle Detailed in Aviation Week & Space Technology
FARNBOROUGH, England, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Farnborough Airshow -- The U.K.'s unveiling of its Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV) technology demonstrator, the Taranis, is featured in this week's issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology. AVIATION WEEK's London Bureau Chief, Douglas Barrie, provides analysis and context in light of London's efforts to plan its future combat aircraft mix.
"The U.K.'s Taranis is a significant step toward a low-observable unmanned combat air vehicle, but it is only a step," says Douglas Barrie, London Bureau Chief, AVIATION WEEK. "The project is also a core element in sustaining British industry's national capacity to design and develop combat air systems. However further funding and support will be required in the comparatively near term if this is to continue. Similarly, the multinational Neuron UCAV program is serving the same function in other European countries. London will at some point most likely need to decide whether to pursue a European collaborative program, or to get involved further with Washington in developing an operational UCAV."
As Unmanned Vehicles (UVs) rise in numbers and influence, AVIATION WEEK is there covering the technology, programs, and operational use of UVs around the world. A special report on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles will be included in the August 23-30 double issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology, and a new, dedicated "Unmanned Horizons" channel will debut on AviationWeek.com in September 2010.
