UK's NHS Supply Chain Selects 20 TrueBeam Treatment Machines to Enable More Advanced Treatments
UK public hospitals acquire Varian's advanced systems for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery
CRAWLEY, United Kingdom, Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NHS Supply Chain has placed an order for 20 TrueBeam™ machines from Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) as part of a program to replace older machines and roll out modern radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatments for patients in the UK's public hospitals. The order, placed in June, follows a successful program that last year saw ten TrueBeam systems delivered to radiotherapy departments across the country.
"This is an important deal which enables the NHS to modernize its base of linear accelerators to provide technologically advanced cancer treatments, as well as shorten treatment times," says Andy Brown, managing director of business solutions at NHS Supply Chain. The TrueBeam system is equipped with a high dose delivery rate that enables some treatments to be completed more quickly than was possible with earlier generations of radiotherapy technology.
Through the deal, NHS hospitals across the country will take delivery of TrueBeam systems through the NHS Supply Chain. In last year's program, the ten TrueBeam systems were delivered to oncology centers in Newcastle, Liverpool, Hull, Sheffield, Guildford, Hereford, Poole, and London.
"Through the capital equipment fund, NHS Supply Chain has been able to stimulate replacement of older, less capable systems within NHS hospitals and we are delighted that TrueBeam is being offered through this channel," said David Scott, Varian's UK sales director. "The commitment by NHS Supply Chain to select 20 TrueBeam systems demonstrates confidence in new technology and Varian as a company, as well as a close alignment between Varian and the UK government's stated goal of saving up to 10,000 more lives per year."
"This recognizes the demand for highly efficient, state-of-the-art technology for the treatment of cancer in NHS hospitals. As the leading provider of radiotherapy equipment and software to the NHS, Varian is committed to ensuring patients have access to cutting edge technology while also recognizing that modern healthcare must be efficient, effective and affordable. This deal will help ensure that today's NHS meets all three of these targets."
Designed to treat a moving tumor with speed and accuracy, Varian's TrueBeam system incorporates numerous technical innovations that dynamically synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery during a radiotherapy or radiosurgery procedure. TrueBeam has been designed to advance the treatment of lung, breast, intracranial, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer.
According to NHS Supply Chain, there are approximately 300 linear accelerators in NHS hospitals and as many as 100 of these are over ten years old.
