U.K. Government Selects Unisys to Support Its G-Cloud Initiative
Government Procurement Service awards Unisys with Specialist Cloud Services role
LONDON, Feb. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that its U.K. subsidiary has been selected to enter into a framework agreement through which the U.K. government may request Unisys to deliver Specialist Cloud Services as part of the government's new G-Cloud framework.
The Government Procurement Service, an executive agency of the Cabinet Office, made the selection. The full range of services that may be requested under the framework can be viewed on the government's new CloudStore web site, which MP Francis Maude announced on February 19.
The G-Cloud framework is part of the U.K. government's program to transform its services. Stated goals of the framework are to: achieve cross government economies of scale; deliver flexible and responsive IT systems to support government policies and strategies; take advantage of new technologies; meet environmental and sustainability targets and create a dynamic procurement process and supplier marketplace. The U.K. government has also tasked the G-Cloud initiative with achieving dramatic cost savings, with a view to saving as much as 340 million pounds Sterling[1] (US$536 million) of public cash between now and 2015.
Unisys may be requested to advise government agencies looking to implement hybrid computing models and integrate public and private cloud environments alongside existing IT infrastructures. The hybrid cloud model is designed to enable government CIOs to maintain control, manage governance and compliance, reduce IT costs and tackle organizational issues more easily.
Unisys has been invited to join the framework for Specialist Cloud Services alongside organizations offering expertise and technology for other cloud services, including: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS); Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS).
"We are thrilled to have been chosen to assist the government with its G-Cloud initiative. Our experience in the public sector in the U.K., and around the world, has prepared us well for the challenges of this new era of cloud computing," comments Rob Chapman, Managing Director for U.K., Middle East and Africa at Unisys. "We look forward to the opportunity to help the government use cloud computing to transform the way it delivers services and reduce costs."
Unisys is a major provider of cloud computing IT solutions, having recently migrated tens of thousands of users to Google Apps at several U.S. public sector organizations. In 2011, Unisys worked with Google to successfully migrate 17,000 email users to Google Apps for Government, a secure cloud-based email and collaboration platform. In response to the overhaul, the General Services Administration (GSA) anticipated that the transition to the cloud would make substantial savings, reducing email operation costs by 50 percent and saving $15.2 million over five years.
