UHC Named a Hospital Engagement Network by the Department of Health and Human Services
CHICAGO, Dec. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- UHC is pleased to announce it has been awarded a Hospital Engagement Contractor for the Partnership for Patients initiative being conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. This new partnership program aims to make meaningful strides in advancing the quality, safety and affordability of health care for all Americans through two significant goals:
- Reducing preventable hospital-acquired conditions by 40% by the end of 2013
- Preventing complications in care setting transitions to reduce preventable hospital readmissions by 20% by the end of 2013
"The objectives of the Partnership for Patients initiative are vitally important and directly align with UHC's strategic focus on supporting its members, the nation's leading academic medical centers, in their continuous efforts to improve health care quality, safety and cost-effectiveness," said Irene Thompson, UHC president and chief executive officer.

In addition to its direct role as a Partnership for Patients Hospital Engagement Contractor, UHC will provide data and analytic services as a subcontractor to the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems, which also was named a Hospital Engagement Contractor.
