HOUSTON, Nov. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The University of Houston Law Center is hosting two pre-law conferences this month designed to provide African American and Hispanic aspiring lawyers information, resources, and contacts needed to succeed in law school and beyond. The 11th annual National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair and the inaugural National Hispanic Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair will be held Nov. 13 and 14 with most of the speakers and panel discussions taking place in Law Center classrooms and Krost Hall. A concurrent law school recruitment fair will occur on Nov. 14 in the Houston Room of the UH Student Center South and is expected to draw representatives from more than 100 schools nationwide.
"I am excited to host this national conference of prospective law school students; this conference will showcase the Law Center's commitment to diversity and the education of the next generation of legal scholars," said UH Law Center Dean Leonard M. Baynes.
Conferences will include keynote and special guest speakers, workshop sessions and panel discussions, a mock law class, a clinic on preparing applications and writing personal and diversity statements and resumes, an Law School Admission Test (LSAT) test-taking strategy session, mock diagnostic LSAT, networking activities, and receptions.
Among the dozens of speakers and panelists are Professor Charles T. Ogletree Jr., founder of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School; former Texas state Rep. Sylvester Turner of Barnes & Turner LLP in Houston; and Benny Agosto Jr., a partner in the firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend in Houston.
During his first year as dean of the UH Law Center, Baynes initiated a six-week, pre-law pipeline program similarly designed to provide information and resources to undergraduate students who are first generation, low income, or members of groups historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Twenty-one undergraduate students from across the country took part in the inaugural class and the program is expected to expand in 2016.
