UFCW Local 1776 Rite Aid Members Ratify a New Collective Bargaining Agreement
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa., July 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- UFCW Local 1776 members employed by Rite Aid ratified a new collective bargaining agreement last night (Wednesday, July 27, 2011) with 71% voting in favor of the new contract. The agreement covers approximately 2600 members working in the Philadelphia, Reading and Northeast Pennsylvania areas.
The new agreement ends three years of very challenging negotiations over wages, benefits and working conditions. The agreement was presented to the membership at seven meetings throughout the Local 1776 jurisdiction, with the last of the meetings being held last night (Wednesday, July 27, 2011) in Philadelphia and Pittston.
Representatives from the company and the union, along with the negotiating committee comprised of Local 1776 members employed by Rite Aid, worked diligently to hammer out the new agreement. "A lot of the credit has to go to our members on the negotiating committee," said Local 1776 President Wendell Young. "They hung in there supporting their position, at times working long hours deliberating over some very emotional issues".
UFCW Local 1776 represents 24,000 members who work in southeast, northeast and central Pennsylvania, northeast Maryland and southern New York in supermarkets, drug stores, food processing plants, government services, manufacturing facilities, nursing homes, professional offices and Pennsylvania's Wine and Spirits Shops.
