SAN DIEGO, June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of California, San Diego's Center for Continuing Education in Biosciences (CCE/Bio) and UC San Diego Extension announced their third annual workshop on microbial fermentation, to be held Aug. 12 – 14, 2015, at UC San Diego (see agenda). This three-day workshop provides an intense exposure to best practices and the latest developments in industrial biotechnology, and is well-suited to biologists, process engineers and business executives planning next steps in their adoption of this strategic technology.

"Fermentation for industrial applications is big, and growing fast," said Jeff Lievense, executive vice president, process technology, Genomatica, and one of the workshop's instructors. "It will change our world over the next 20 years."
Microbial fermentation is the transformation of feedstocks, such as plant sugars, into useful products, like fuels, chemicals, beer or antibiotics, by bacteria, yeast, fungi or algae. Continuing advances in the field are making it practical and beneficial to apply biotech to a growing range of products.
Attendees in the workshop will benefit through interactive training, case studies and one-on-one consulting – and by interacting with leading practitioners.
This year's program features James Golden, Ph.D., professor of molecular biology at UC San Diego, along with faculty from MiraCosta College and technology leaders from Genomatica and DuPont. The instructors, with more than 150 years of collective experience, will dive into microbial growth and metabolism, bioreactor operations, bioprocess design, experimental design, process scale-up and techno-economic analysis.
