IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- University of California, Irvine Extension will offer two new online courses, "Optomechanical Systems Engineering," and "Introduction to Radiometry: The Propagation and Measurement of Optical Radiant Energy," from Jan. 13 through March 23. Participants of "Optomechanical Systems Engineering" will gain further knowledge towards the development of optomechanical components. The "Introduction to Radiometry" course will provide tools to understand radiometric propagation laws and the outcome of optical radiant power calculations. In addition, UC Irvine Extension will also offer a free webinar titled, "Radiometry Rides to the Rescue in Optical System Characterization and Evaluation," on Tuesday, Dec. 10 to provide an inside look at the optical engineering design process of a satellite launch mission.

Winter Quarter Courses:
- Optomechanical Systems Engineering (Jan. 13 through March 23) – Taught by course instructor, Keith J. Kasunic, Ph.D., participants will expand practical knowledge of building optical hardware with a systems-level overview of optomechanical engineering. The course focus is placed on real-world design problems, as well as the commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components used to solve these problems.
- Introduction to Radiometry (Jan. 13 through March 23) – This course, taught by Barbara G. Grant M.S., will cover source properties, blackbody radiation laws and approximations, and properties of optical materials including transmission, reflection, absorption, and emission. At the end of this course, participants will grasps concepts related to the equation of radiative transfer and present simplifications to permit the solution of many practical problems.
Course instructor, Barbara G. Grant will host the free webinar, "Radiometry Rides to the Rescue in Optical System Characterization and Evaluation," and provide a step-by-step account of the optical engineering design process of a nationally-critical satellite launch mission.
