UC Irvine Extension Introduces Tools for New College Graduates on Coursera
Online Courses Provide Practical Skills Development for Workplace Application
IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension, the continuing education unit of UC Irvine and an innovator in online and open education, today announced that 12 career readiness courses will be introduced on the Coursera learning platform. These courses will be offered as Coursera Specializations, as announced by Coursera earlier today. These courses are designed to provide learners with further skills and abilities to succeed in today's workplace. The UC Irvine Extension courses consist of online training and a sequence of development sessions, intended for new graduates and other professionals who want to learn practical skills that will improve their marketability as employees.
"We know that many college graduates complete their degrees with a skills gap which prevents them from successfully competing in the present day workforce," said Gary W. Matkin, Ph.D., dean of Continuing Education, Distance Learning and Summer Session. "These courses meet that need, adding to the education attained in a four-year degree with further specific and actionable skills, to prepare students for the evolving workplace."
The 12 courses offered by UC Irvine Extension on Coursera represent four Specializations, covering topics such as project management tools and practices, business communication skills, management skills, finance and time management:
- Introduction to Project Management Tools and Practices: Provides participants with the skills to identify and manage projects, create a project plan and budget, define and allocate resources, manage the project development, and understand the project procurement process.
- Business Communication for Career Readiness: Participants learn how business communication (verbal and nonverbal) and professional relationships work in today's business environment, and how to develop must-have skills and apply them immediately to personal experience and everyday business practice.
- Practical Management for Career Readiness: Offers participants the ability to gain applied skills in management, learn effective problem-solving and decision-making methods and the critical thinking required in the essentials of entrepreneurship.
