IRVINE, Calif., May 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension announced a new course and webinar as part of its growing Meeting and Event Management Specialized Studies Program. The course Event Risk Management: Financial, Legal and Ethical Safeguards will provide event planning professionals with a practical approach for understanding and using legal safeguards to plan safe and successful events. Offered on the UC Irvine campus, the course will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Event planning has evolved into a complex industry that requires sharp attention to detail," said Melanie Mitchell, director of management, marketing and business programs at UC Irvine Extension. "This course will arm professionals with the knowledge and strategies necessary for navigating potential obstacles in the event planning process."
Participants will learn to identify various sources of hospitality law, apply ethical principles to the meeting industry, and explain legal elements required in contract formation. Course instructor Sandra Chong, J.D., is a licensed and practicing attorney in Calif. since 1999, and has successfully represented hotels, travel agencies and industry professionals in lawsuits and disputes. She has more than 12 years of instructional experience and is experienced in planning formal luncheons, dragon boat festivals and community events.
Chong will also host a free Event Risk Management Information Session previewing some of the content included in the full course. The webinar will take place online on May 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. PDT.
