UAE Embassy in Washington, DC Announces $2 Million Donation to the New York City Police Foundation
NEW YORK, Nov. 17, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Continuing nearly a decade of close cooperation, UAE Ambassador to the United States Yousef Al Otaiba met with New York City Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James P. O'Neill and Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller to announce a new grant of $2 million to the New York City Police Foundation (NYCPF).
The grant will sustain support for the NYPD's International Liaison Program (ILP), one of the most comprehensive counterterrorism initiatives in the United States, as well as support NYPD programs which help fight crime in New York City.
"The close cooperation between the NYPD and the UAE Government has made us all safer," said Ambassador Yousef Al Otaiba. "We are improving our mutual counter-terrorism capabilities by sharing best practices, having UAE law enforcement personnel training with the NYPD, and by hosting an ongoing NYPD presence in Abu Dhabi."
Since 2009, as part of the ILP program, an NYPD detective has been posted in the UAE as one of 14 NYPD officers working abroad. The Abu Dhabi Police Department also has officers regularly posted in New York, participating in NYPD training and counter-terrorism coordination programs.
"This generous assistance to the ILP is incredibly meaningful to the Police Foundation's ability to provide the critical resources that help the NYPD defend the city from global terrorism and to fight crime," said Susan L. Birnbaum.
In 2013, then NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly signed agreement with the UAE to help enhance the department's worldwide counterterrorism efforts and share information on training methods. In addition, the NYPD has advised Abu Dhabi's Critical Infrastructure & Coastal Protection Authority (CICPA) on how to protect its assets.
Earlier this year, NYPD Chief of Intelligence Thomas Galati travelled to Abu Dhabi to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the UAE's Ministry of the Interior regarding joint training and sharing of best practices.
