WAUWATOSA, Wis., May 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul is giving new life to the former Harley-Davidson location at 11700 West Capitol Drive. Now known as U-Haul Moving and Storage of Wauwatosa, this 394,840 square foot facility is currently offering truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies and hitches.
General Manager Kenneth Heitman is proud to be reusing this historical site and in bringing the first U‑Haul location into Wauwatosa.
"Having a U-Haul center in this community will allow greater access to moving and storage services closer to customers' homes," explained Heitman. "It brings a large company into the community while shrinking its carbon footprint."
This brick masonry and steel building was built in 1943, with additions to the original building made throughout its years of operation. With its clear visibility from Highway 45 and convenient freeway access, this location is ideal for U-Haul. This facility sits on 21.66 acres of land and includes a 31,980 square foot basement. Future plans for this facility include the addition of U‑Box moving and self‑storage containers.
"This building was originally built by A.O. Smith to support fighter-plane assembly during World War II, but was not completed until the war had ended," Heitman said. "Harley-Davidson acquired the building in 1947 and it became home to their powertrain-assembly line."
"I am excited to see U-Haul establish itself in a new market here in Wauwatosa and do so while honoring Harley-Davidson and how it represents the greater Milwaukee area and Wisconsin as a whole," Heitman continued. "We are connecting the U-Haul name and reputation with Harley-Davidson and continuing their legacy."
The acquisition of this Harley-Davidson facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
