THOMASVILLE, N.C., Nov. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The historic building that first housed the beloved Bost Bakery some 52 years ago now serves as the location for U-Haul Moving & Storage of Thomasville at 1020 Randolph St.
The 4.4-acre property features a two-story building with 66,870 square feet of space, not including a 32,000 square-foot basement. U-Haul opened for business on June 1 and currently offers truck and trailer rentals, moving supplies and U-Box portable moving and self-storage containers.
"We are excited to revitalize this historic, well-known property and bring it back to life," U-Haul Company of Central North Carolina president Jason Grider said. "It had become an eyesore and we are pleased to restore its former appeal."
At its height, Bost Bakery employed nearly 2,000 people in and around Thomasville. In the 1970s, Bost was sold to Wonder Bread. It remained a bakery for another decade before closing shop. U-Haul is in the process of refurbishing the property.
"All responses have been positive since we opened," Grider said. "Many people recall themselves or family and friends working at Bost. The history of the building and being located right in the heart of Thomasville will help customers find us."
The acquisition of the Thomasville facility was driven by U-Haul Company's Corporate Sustainability initiatives: U-Haul® supports infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint. Our adaptive reuse of existing buildings reduces the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps cities reduce their unwanted inventory of unused buildings.
General manager Amy Zimmer said residents are grateful to have access to a new U-Haul store, which joins a number of U-Haul neighborhood dealerships in the community.
"We have been told by customers and city officials how excited they are to see the old bakery being repurposed," Zimmer said. "Many know the condition the building was in and are glad to know that it will once again operate and serve the community of Thomasville."
