PHOENIX, Nov. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- U-Haul International has been named as a finalist for the Platts 2014 Global Energy Awards in the "Efficiency Initiative – Commercial End-User" category because of its long-term commitment to conducting business in a socially responsible manner: protecting the environment while benefiting the communities it serves.
"U-Haul is honored to have been selected as a finalist for the Platts Global Energy Award because it reflects our commitment to the efficiency initiatives that our customers and future generations expect," stated Stuart Shoen, executive vice president of U-Haul International.
U-Haul implements energy-efficiency programs in its operations at its headquarters as well as regionally and internationally. On average, 25 energy-reduction projects per month are completed across North America through the U‑Haul Sustainability Grant Program, which has achieved an estimated energy savings of 48 million kWh annually.
Adaptive reuse of existing buildings is a priority when acquiring new U-Haul facility space throughout North America. Rehabilitating older buildings, especially those of architectural or historic character, is not only good for the environment, but also strengthens local communities by allowing a city to boost its economy by putting those buildings to use. The U-Haul Building Green Initiative begins with identifying and implementing energy-efficient (both direct and indirect) design strategies at new and existing locations that are kind to both the environment and the immediate community.
Other U-Haul sustainability initiatives include; 100 percent recycled-content moving pads, biodegradable packing peanuts and box-sharing programs. U-Haul boasts one of the largest propane-dispensing infrastructures in North America, refilling BBQ grills, heaters, recreation vehicles and alternative-fuel (LPG) vehicles using one of our nation's most versatile, clean-burning energy sources.
U-Haul also partners with The Conservation Fund's Go Zero® and Tree Canada's Grow Clean Air Programs, offering customers the option to contribute a dollar amount at the point-of-sale to support tree planting, urban restoration and green economic development. These tree-planting partnerships provide measurable benefits to the communities U-Haul serves in both the United States and Canada. More than one million U-Haul customers have supported these programs to date.
The Platts "Efficiency Initiative – Commercial End User" Award recognizes energy management programs run within large corporations or agencies seeking to improve the way they use their energy.
The winner will be announced in New York City on December 11, 2014.
