TEMPE, Ariz., April 13, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Edward J. "Joe" Shoen, a business leader with 30 years of executive experience, will be awarded the 2017 Executive of the Year Award by Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business. The award honors business leaders who have created and sustained superior organization performance, and whose presence exemplifies a model for future business leaders.
In recognition of Shoen's proven performance as president, chairman and CEO of AMERCO, the parent company of U-Haul International, the school will honor him at a luncheon at the JW Marriott Scottsdale Camelback Inn Resort on April 19.
"In his three decades as the chief executive at U-Haul, Joe Shoen has demonstrated the sort of vision and leadership that this award was designed to recognize," says W. P. Carey School of Business Dean Amy Hillman. "He's overseen not just growth but also diversification, helping to grow and enrich the U-Haul brand along the way. And of course, as an ASU alum leading a prominent Phoenix-based business, we couldn't be more proud to honor Joe this year."
Shoen, 68, grew up in the U-Haul organization and became president in 1987. His parents founded U-Haul in 1945 as WWII was coming to a close. Shoen's sons, Sam and Stuart, are the third generation actively managing U-Haul as a family business today. Shoen is a graduate of the College of Holy Cross, Harvard Business School and ASU's Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law.
In 1987, Shoen set out to refocus U-Haul on its core business to serve the do-it-yourself moving and self-storage customer. At that time, U-Haul had 4,600 rental outlets. Today, U-Haul boasts more than 21,000 locations across North America serving millions of customers each year. With a fleet of trucks, trailers and towing devices totaling 285,000, U-Haul is the No. 1 choice for do-it-yourself movers, and one of the largest self-storage operators in North America.
Shoen is the 34th Executive of the Year chosen by the Dean's Council, a national group of prominent executives who advise the W. P. Carey School of Business.
The event, which starts at 11:30 a.m., is part of the annual Economic Club of Phoenix speaker series.
